Most small retailers should buy a 2D imager scanner. It reads standard UPC and EAN barcodes plus QR codes and barcodes on phone screens, which 1D laser scanners cannot. Choose USB for a fixed counter, Bluetooth for a mobile setup, and check your POS system's supported hardware list. To sell your own products in other retailers, register barcodes through GS1.
A barcode scanner should be the least interesting part of your checkout. Picking the right type keeps it that way.
Scanner types
| Type | Reads | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 1D laser | Standard linear barcodes (UPC, EAN, Code 128) | Basic counters, lowest cost |
| 1D linear imager | Linear barcodes, including damaged ones | Durable 1D scanning |
| 2D imager | Linear, QR, Data Matrix, codes on phone screens | Most new setups |
| Presentation scanner | Hands-free, items passed in front | Busy counters |
Connection
| Connection | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| USB corded | Simple, no charging | Tethered to the counter |
| Bluetooth | Mobile, pairs with tablets | Charging, pairing |
| Wireless with base | Longer range, reliable | Higher cost |
Most scanners use keyboard emulation (USB HID), so they type the barcode into whatever field is active. That makes them broadly compatible, but tablets and some POS apps have their own supported lists.
Your own product barcodes
Retail UPC barcodes come from GS1 US, which assigns a company prefix. Barcodes bought from resellers may not be accepted by major retailers or marketplaces. For in-store inventory only, internal barcodes printed on a label printer work fine.
Other checkout hardware
Receipt printers come in 58 mm and 80 mm paper widths, and cash drawers often open through the receipt printer. Check your POS provider’s hardware list for both.

Common questions
Do I need a 2D barcode scanner?
If you will scan QR codes, digital coupons or tickets on phones, yes. A 2D imager also reads standard 1D barcodes.
Will any USB scanner work with my POS?
Most USB scanners act like a keyboard and work widely, but check your POS provider's compatibility list to be sure.
What is the difference between a laser and an imager?
Laser scanners read 1D barcodes by sweeping a beam. Imagers take a picture and can read 1D, 2D and on-screen codes.
Where do I get UPC barcodes for my products?
From GS1 US, which issues company prefixes. Major retailers and marketplaces often require GS1-issued barcodes.
